How POTS Works—and What to Do About It (Satish R. Raj, 2006)
Apr 23, 2025What they did: They reviewed dozens of POTS cases to explain causes, how to spot them, and what treatment options were available.
What they found:
- Standing up too fast makes your heart race by 30+ extra beats per minute without signicantly dropping blood pressure.
- Three primary “types” of POTS: nerve-related, low blood volume, or overactive stress response. Why it matters for you:
- Lifestyle fixes: Raise the head of your bed by 4–6 inches, wear compression stockings, eat small, frequent meals, drink plenty of water, and add extra salt (if your doctor agrees).
- Medications: Fludrocortisone to boost blood volume; midodrine or pyridostigmine to tighten vessels; beta‑blockers to calm an overactive heart.
